Happy Saint Patricks Day
Twas the Irish what invented the pipes, you know, and they gave them to the Scots as a joke. And the Scots haven't gotten the joke yet!
Being a jewish buddhist, I guess I have to be the one to break it to you that bagpipes were widespread throughout Europe from the Turkey to the Atlantic and from Gibraltar to Scandinavia.
But if you handle having your heart broken, see if you can find Davey Spillane's "A Tribute to Pedar O'Donnell" It's hauntingly lovely. Spillane is a culture hero in Ireland.
That's the tune, Diane. Moving Hearts was made up of alumni of bothe Planxty and The Bothy Bamd, and was more rock, than updated Celtic. But they had Christy Moore singing lead, and Donal Lunny arranging and playing celtic bouzouki.
I was showing off some production monitors to a client and put that tune on from the Moving Hearts album. It's simply Davey, playing over a synth bed played by Lunny. A couple of hiphoppers (black and in full baggies and hoodies) were in the room with us an looking at mixers.
They stopped cold and come over to listen, and we all stood quietly and heard the whole piece out. When it was over, there was this bit of silence, and one of them whispered quietly, "God damn".
Browne and Lindely step over line into beautiful musican-ship and talent so easily. I always remember them as wonderful and then hearing them play, it's even better.
