No trees because they cut them all down to build cabins and to brace up the mines with. Early pic's of our area, the tree's are all just young ones....then, they started using giant hoses and started washing the Mountains away, causing crops to get flooded in the valleys. Good thing that got stopped, or all of CA would be desert.
