The Paradox Fund

Just wanted to throw this up for discussion. Am I reaching to high in thinking about setting up a non-profit Paradox Fund in support the arts or maybe a medical fund for struggling or aging artists. I know most of us are not wealthy in anything but Karma and ideas, but I think it's worth talking about. It would be a great way to keep The Paradox legacy alive when we are gone. That is definitely a worthwhile endeavor. Feedback appreciated.

I think it's a GREAT idea, Gary.

Maybe some sort of a small grant program to help people stay afloat or, to keep with the watery metaphor, launch a new career or cd.

Many of us are not wealthy, but there are those amongst us who could help us get something like this started.

Thanks for the support,Diane.
I've been thinking about this for quite a while. We certainly have enough of a network available to make this happen. I think if we reach out to all the Family members we might be surprised.
It's a way to create a lasting legacy and keep the spirit of The Paradox alive for future generations. Small is better then doing nothing.
I'm open to all ideas folks.

Hi Gary, what do you have in mind? Not being people of means, especially in this economy, I don't see it amounting to vast amount of bucks, but it sounds like a very worthy project. Throw out you ideas......

The Millinium
Numbers.
But it marks the difference in the two worlds. The 2K world is new. Some of it looks similar, but the world is different now.
A Paradox Fund, looked at in a digital view, totally different than what has gone before, will work.
A standard old time copy of funds of the past will not.
I'd love to see this new
kind of machine grow. I think the Sheffers had the vision and nerve to start something new once and that worked out pretty well.

A personal gripe or observation or something.

Rand...I'm not lurking this is my post! I read your comment but don't quite understand what you are suggtesting. Maybe you could clarify a little for this simple mind, so I can put to good use....

I never lurk.... I always comment ... so here are some more 2 cents....

So how about this idea in the spirit of the 21st century:

Gary, the price of housing is (relatively) cheap now. You should consider buying a large Paradox safe house in Nevada City/Grass Valley for retired or retiring musicians. It could host house concerts, have fund raisers, grow an organic garden, and be near and dear to Bob and Helen.

It could be technically owned by a non-profit that would survive beyond the first generation of Paradoxers. From my understanding, this was in the spirit of what Utah Philips did there and would be a great contribution to the community Bob and Helen started, both in Orange County and in Nevada City.

And if the economy continues to stall, I may be joining you all with a little trailer out back if you will accept a token writer in residence!

It's strange that you would mention that.
Dave Hall and I had talked about the dream of re-opening The Paradox in an old house with a kitchen and recording studio and guest quarters for the artist in temporary residence.Purpose being to capture the intimate and informal setting of a house concert and to be able to capture that same magic on media.Sort of a Paradox B&B.
Keep the ideas coming...

A friend once pointed me to an Irish pub that features traditional music downstairs and hosts a b&b/hostel upstairs. I should look for the link again.

If you found the right space, you could have it all -- performance venue, music retreat center, studio space, visiting artists, and resident Paradoxers. Also, Penny travels offering song-writing classes each summer -- why not offer them there?

I think you could put together an impressive not-for-profit business plan for something like that with a long-term potential to endure.

There could be something great in that idea, Gary!

Since we're exploring this idea, lets add this to the mix. How about an artist in residence program offering a short but intensive limited enrollment tutoring program culminating in a
recorded House Concert open to the public. Possibly even on a subscription basis. Funds would be raised through tickets and sales of the recordings. I know this sounds like a lofty idea but this approach has been successful in other music programs.

Could this be the northern California Dirt House?

Gary and Susan Mullen said...

I'd like to think we've evolved a little since those days. The truth is, I don't think the world is ready for another "DIRT HOUSE".
On the other hand, given my history I could be wrong!

Diane Smith said...

The Dirt House.... oh, dear.

I just remember a really big house in Pasadena, I think. Was that the Dirt House? If so, I think we could work with it.

On comments;
I was meaning to encourage folks to post.
Silly me.
I worded that much to stupidly. What I wanted to say is comments are the life of a blog.
I assume there are thousands of readers eager to read this blog and simply wanted to hear from them.
Too many great posts go silent.

Rand...Didn't mean to vent on you. It just caught me off guard...Peace

Awww....I know.
These kind of messages have a certain style and one (me) has to be very careful of "tone".

So be carefull of this one.
It's meant to be nice.:)
Support of artists can be simple and cheap. Look and listen. Comment on their work in blogs and on Youtube. Buy the work if you like it.

Here in SC we have a new artists work-live building.
bsThis is millions$ for a bureau-cratic nightmare for a very few people who fit a very small discription. What we really want and need is display-performance-gallery space.
For the PF the first step is a NP Corporation. That's easy. I did it once.
